Attach DocStudio Files to FileStudio

Explains how a `.wsdoc` can be linked to FileStudio as an editable source for a main record or annex, then paired with a final issued file.

A DocStudio file can be sent to FileStudio as a linked editable source.

This is different from uploading a Main Editable File inside FileStudio. The Main Editable File control is for editable/source files from your computer, such as DOCX or another external working file. A .wsdoc sent from DocStudio remains a linked WorkStudio source.

You can attach a .wsdoc in two ways:

  • as the linked editable source for the main record
  • as the linked editable source for an annex under the same record

A common workflow is:

  1. Save the .wsdoc in your personal account or in a company / project.
  1. In the save window, choose the FileStudio attach action.
  1. Search for the FileStudio record you want.
  1. Choose whether the DocStudio file should be attached as Main or Annex.
  1. Save the link.

After that, FileStudio keeps the DocStudio file as the editable source.

Later, when you issue a final deliverable, add that final file to the same FileStudio location. The final file can be a PDF or another released document.

If the DocStudio file is linked as the main source:

  • before a final main file exists, the linked .wsdoc is the openable source for the record
  • after a final main file is attached, the final file becomes the normal main file and the .wsdoc stays available as the editable source

If the DocStudio file is linked as an annex source:

  • the final file becomes the normal file opened for that annex
  • the .wsdoc stays available as the editable source for that annex

When a final file and an editable source both exist, FileStudio can show two choices, such as a PDF chip and a DS chip, or an Open Editable action for the linked source.

You can remove only one side without deleting the whole record or annex.

For a main document:

  • Remove Editable Source detaches the linked .wsdoc but keeps the FileStudio record
  • deleting or replacing the final file does not remove the DocStudio source unless you choose that separately
  • Delete Main Editable File applies to an uploaded editable sidecar, not to the linked .wsdoc

For an annex:

  • Delete Final File removes the attached final artifact but keeps the annex
  • the editable .wsdoc can stay linked to that annex

If you want a published workflow, attach the final file and turn on the read-only option for the editable DocStudio source. FileStudio will then open the final document first, while the .wsdoc stays available for controlled updates.
