Family Relationships Explained

Connect parents, partners and siblings, record dates, and keep evidence with the relationship.

Open a Person and select Relations. In the editor, choose a relationship and an existing Person. For example, on Anna Linden choose Parent and select Robert Linden: Robert is Anna’s parent. Check the resulting inverse Child relationship from Robert’s record. Do not add a second copy of the same connection just to make it appear at both ends.

Use Spouse / Partner for a recorded partnership. Co-parenting alone does not establish marriage. A partner’s name or dates must come from your records, not from a photograph or an assumed shared surname. Sibling connections can be recorded explicitly; children connected to the same parent can also be grouped by the chart.

Date / From becomes Marriage Date for a partnership. Enter only the known precision: full date, month/year, or year. Open More details and Evidence for supporting information and documents. A relationship may refer to evidence already attached to a record; reusing a reference does not require another stored copy of the file.

Relations from other records identify the owner. Use Open owner record to change such a relation, with the required write rights. Remove relation removes the connection; it does not delete either Person or their evidence. Read the confirmation before proceeding.

Close the relation editor, save the Person, then save the collection. Inspect both people and reopen the chart to check the direction and resulting family structure.

Practice with Connect Relatives and Their Evidence.
