SUM

Adds numeric values in TableStudio and supports normal ranges, WBS phase autosums, absolute references with $, and cross-sheet ranges.

SUM is the main add-up function in TableStudio. Use it when you want to total numeric cells, ranges, or values pulled from another sheet.

Basic range examples are =SUM(A1:A10) or =SUM($A$2:$A$100). TableStudio reads non-numeric cells in numeric ranges as 0, and if a range extends past the existing row count the missing rows are also treated as 0.

On a WBS separator or parent row, the exact formula =SUM or =SUM() has a special meaning. In that case TableStudio totals the same column from the next row downward until it reaches the next row whose level is less than or equal to the current WBS level. Nested separator rows are counted once through their own value, so child WBS totals roll up into parent totals without double-counting all descendants.

$ locks the row and or column in normal formula evaluation, not only during copy, insert, or delete shifts. Examples: $A1 locks the column, A$1 locks the row, and $A$1 locks both. SUM accepts absolute references in normal ranges, for example =SUM($A$2:$A$100).

SUM can also work with other sheets. A cross-sheet single-cell read looks like =SH2(C4). For ranges, =SUM(SH2(A1:A10)) sums that range from sheet 2, and a direct range reference such as =SH2(A1:B5) also returns the numeric sum of that range. In scoped workbook or TOBJ contexts you can use WB:SH2(A1:A10) for the main workbook. Sheet numbers are 1-based and follow the sheet labels shown in the dropdown.

Function

SUM(value1, value2, ...)
SUM(range)
SUM(SHn(range))
SUM() on a WBS separator row

Parameters

  • value1, value2, ... / range — One or more numeric literals, cell references, or ranges to add together. Non-numeric cells inside numeric ranges behave as 0.
  • SHn(range) — A cross-sheet range reference wrapped inside SUM, such as SH2(A1:A10), when the total should come from another sheet.
  • no arguments on a WBS row — The exact special form =SUM or =SUM() on a WBS separator or parent row triggers WBS-local aggregation instead of a normal empty-argument sum.

Returns

Returns the numeric total of the provided values or range. In the WBS special form, the exact =SUM or =SUM() on a separator row returns the total of that WBS block in the same column.

=SUM(A1:A10) returns the total of the local range.

On a WBS separator row, =SUM() returns the roll-up total for the child rows in the same column.

WBS separator autosum

On a WBS separator row, the exact formula =SUM or =SUM() totals the same numeric column inside that WBS branch.

Cross-sheet range sum

Use SUM around another sheet range when you want the total in the current sheet.
