Insert from TableStudio
Explains how DocStudio inserts live values from TableStudio, how the linked value behaves, and why a lightweight helper file is used instead of opening the full table each time.
Insert from... lets DocStudio place one value from a TableStudio file into the document.
The basic flow is:
- In DocStudio, choose
Insert from....
- Select the saved TableStudio file.
- TableStudio opens in a new tab in picker mode.
- Select the source cell.
- Click
Insertin TableStudio.
- DocStudio inserts the value as a live linked item.
At first it looks like a normal inserted value, but it stays connected to TableStudio.
That connection is not made by reopening the whole workbook every time. TableStudio writes a small helper file with the exported values, and DocStudio reads that helper when it needs to refresh the linked content.
This keeps document opening lighter and avoids loading the whole table file just to refresh one or two values.
If you insert more than one value from the same TableStudio file, they all reuse the same helper file.
TableStudio owns that helper file.
That means:
- TableStudio decides which cells are exported
- TableStudio updates the helper when exported values change
- DocStudio only reads the helper and refreshes the visible linked value
The linked item in DocStudio is marked on screen so you can recognize it, but that marker does not print.
When the TableStudio file changes, save that TableStudio file so the helper is updated too. After that, DocStudio can refresh from the updated exported value.
This is best for values that should stay coordinated with a working table, for example quantities, dates, references, names, revision values, or other structured data that already lives in TableStudio.
If the helper file is missing or the exported cell is not yet registered, DocStudio keeps the last known value instead of breaking the document. Once the TableStudio file is saved again with the exported value, the live link can refresh normally.
In short: TableStudio is the source of truth, the helper file is the lightweight bridge, and DocStudio shows the value inside the page layout.
